5. Dünya Su Forumu 16-22 Mart 2009 tarihleri arasında çok büyük ve başarılı bir organizasyonla İstanbul’da gerçekleştirildi.
Forumda Karadeniz - KASTOB Enerji-Çevre Grubu Başkanı B: Gül Göktepe’nin 5. Dünya Su Forumu’nda Tema 2.2. “Water for Energy-Energy for Water seksiyonunda yaptığı sunumu “the role of NGOs for the sustainable development plans of water for energy in the Black Sea region.” büyük ilgi gördü.

Rich water resources in the Black Sea region have growing importance for the sustainable development of Turkey. The continues growth in the energy demand and the current worldwide trend on the environmental benefits of renewable energy resources has resulted in the ambitious governmental plans to exploit hydro capacity of various rivers flowing to the Black Sea. However the environmental impact of constructing several small and medium sized hydro electricity plants in the valleys of the Black Sea region has raised great public concern in recent years.
KASTOB (Union of Black Sea Region NGOs) being one of the major NGOs in Turkey has undertaken a special case studies to investigate this issue "Would it be possible to develop hydro power while preserving environmental and cultural values in the valleys of the Black Sea region?".
Ms. Göktepe’s presentation highlighted the public awareness programmes and surveys which were carried out by KASTOB on the risks and benefits of "water for energy" as well as on the growing importance of preserving water resources under the constraints of climatic change. Implementation of various local public awareness projects on the importance of electricity generation for the welfare of the people and the sustainable uses of rivers with reference to a case study of Ikizdere valley.
